Or more to the point...why just not ask his manager?

Why did he not just ask OH if he could have this fairly reasonable adjustment? Surely he didn’t need a GP note at all.

There have been recent discussions on Jisc about pregnancy related matters, and the difference between "nice to have" and "clinically essential". If not working in a chilled environment is "nice to have" then the GP is well within his rights to charge for his little slip of paper.

Hi Eileen,

Thanks for that. Trouble is, he's still at work - he didn't want to be signed off sick, just wanted treatment and a temporary adjustment whilst the treatment took effect.

Andy,
Some GP's take a hard line with clients requesting "Sick certificates" in the first seven days of absence and usually charge for private certificates. After the seven days rule there is no issue.

Dear list,

I've just seen an employee who presented a manager with a private note (he was charged £15) requesting that he avoid working in a chilled environment for two weeks whilst he receives treatment for a chest infection.

Neither his manager or I have a problem with this - I'm just a little perplexed as to why he was charged. He was seen by his own GP in a routine clinic and was prescribed treatment. He mentioned what he did for a living and asked for support with a temporary workplace adjustment. Should he not have just been given a Fit Note with the adjustments recorded on that?

Before I send him back to query why he was charged, I would value the opinion of anyone who knows the facts regarding charging.

Andy
