I would advise to exercise great caution if modifying what could be considered to be a medical device.

A hoist will have undergone significant tests and then been validated by the manufacturer. Modifying it in any way would potentially mean that this validation would no longer exist.

If something was to go wrong, the question arising may well be - who authorised the modification?

My opinion is that any changes to equipment such as a hoist should be via the manufacturer.

Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Hoist - wheeled manual handling aids on carpets

There is a vast range of different wheels available for moving equipment
around. (Just take a look at the Screwfix website and you will see a goodly
selection!). Depending upon the design of the equipment it may even be
possible simply to fit different wheels, more suitable for a particular
surface. Many wheels simple fit into standard sockets. If you have a
particular hoist in mind and can send me a close-up photograph then I might
be able to make some suggestion for you.

For the future, liaison with the manufacturer might even result in them
manufacturing the equipment with a range of interchangeable wheels.
