The NAHMO AGM was held on Saturday at Astley Green,
In the afternoon Club reps were invited to visit Astley Green Colliery
which was a real surprise, there is a remaining Headgear and Engine House
where there is the largest steam winding engine ever used in the
LancashireCoalfield. Built by Messers' Yates & Thom in 1912, the twin
tandem compound
engine delivers 3,300 hp. and is probably the largest Winders in the UK.
There are various engines and artefact's left preserved on the site.
Everything is managed and run by volunteers from the Red Rose Steam
Society. Its only open 3 afternoons a week .
See the website for details of location and other information http://www.
agcm.org.uk/index.shtml
This is an absolute gem and very worthy of a visit and society would
certainly welcome any additional support
