The Publishers Association, the Centre for Publishing at University College
London and EDItEUR announce the next Digital Publishers Forum.

These events examine digital issues of strategic importance to academic,
professional, educational or trade publishers through a mix of presentations
and discussion sessions.

Wednesday 21 March 2012, 4-6pm, Roberts 106 LT, UCL, London WC1, followed by
a reception in the Arts and Humanities Common Room, G24

This third seminar of 2012 will be chaired by Anthony Watkinson, Senior
Lecturer, Department of Information Studies, UCL.

Speakers include Robert Faber, Editorial Director of Reference, Oxford
University Press, Anne Kail, UK Sales Manager of Credo Reference, and Ian
Grant, Managing Director, Encyclopaedia Britannica.

This forum is concerned with the huge changes in reference publishing over
the last decade and how it has gone digital in a spectacular way, making a
space for trusted resources in spite of Wikipedia, and working with
librarians to enable discovery and reach new audiences. Our three speakers
will tell the real story, warts and all, and look to future opportunities as
well as threats.

Robert Faber is Editorial Director of Reference and in charge of the wider
discoverability programme at Oxford University Press. OUP successfully moved
their reference collection online some time ago and have found a wider
audience among the general public. They are seeking to establish meaning in
the concept of discoverability.

Anne Kail is the UK Sales Manager of Credo Reference. Her talk will focus on
reference’s traditional role as a welcome to the library and its resources,
which in the digital age is more important than ever. Credo leads users into
all of a library’s other resources and Anne will cover how this works in
some detail – this approach increases the usage of publishers’ content
whether they have it in Credo or not.

Ian Grant is the Managing Director of Encyclopaedia Britannica UK and has
had a long career in trade publishing. He will talk about the ‘pain points’
that Britannica identifies in the reference and resources needs of faculty
and students, and ways to apply balm to those pains through online and
mobile publishing.
