Dear library and knowledge services staff,

Please find below your regular update on NHS Evidence.

Monthly update to NHS Evidence portal sources
One new source went live in January 2012:

* European Medicines Agency - (http://www.ema.europa.eu/): All content under Human Medicines, including pending EC decisions and European Public Assessment Reports, scientific guidelines, herbal scientific guidelines and compassionate use.

NICE Joint Information Day
At the end of last year the 3rd NICE Joint Information Day was held at the Royal Institute of British Architects (London). Facilitated by NICE Information Services, the day provided an opportunity for NICE staff and contractors to network and share best practice examples and ideas.

Over 75 information specialists joined the workshop which included presentations on the changing role of NICE in the reformed NHS and findings from Alison Brettle's study, 'Using a systematic review to build evidence and develop skills for library practice'. Attendees had the opportunity to attend parallel sessions, including the contribution of CINAHL to NICE clinical guidelines and the future of Healthcare Databases Advanced Search. A highlight was the poster session which gave staff the chance to review the highlights, achievements and challenges faced in 2011.

The Lancet
We are aware that some users have been experiencing problems accessing The Lancet. Problems may have occurred where users tried to access the resource via other sites; unfortunately this is not possible, with the exception of Science Direct. At present users are required to register once on the Science Direct site to access the Lancet, we are currently taking steps to have this removed.

Please note that access is working correctly via the NHS Evidence A to Z list and in HDAS services.
To access The Lancet:

 1. Go to NHS Evidence, click on Journals and Databases<https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/nhs-evidence-content/journals-and-databases> and login with your NHS Athens password. If you do not have an NHS Athens password, register at https://register.athensams.net/nhs/nhseng/ (note the eligibility criteria<http://www.library.nhs.uk/athens/eligibility>).
 2. Once logged in there are two options to get through to the journal:

a) Go to the A-Z List of Journals (http://www.library.nhs.uk/booksandjournals/journals/default.aspx)

You will be prompted for your NHS Athens login again if you want to access an article.

b) Search databases at http://www.library.nhs.uk/booksandjournals/advanced/default.aspx

When you search within databases such as Medline and Embase, and your search result includes articles from The Lancet, you can access these directly via a link under the article citation (see below).

[cid:image005.png@01CCFBB0.2C9F6040]

NICE has purchased The Lancet from 2008; your local library may have access content preceding this. If you experience any further issues please contact the NHS Evidence team<https://www.evidence.nhs.uk/contact-us>.

Improvement to NHS Evidence filters
You may have already noticed that the filters on the left of all NHS Evidence search results - which enable users to drill down into results - have been enhanced so that once set, they are retained for subsequent searches. To return to the default settings, simply select the 'clear filters' link (visible below the filters when any of them are selected).

Latest Evidence Updates from NHS Evidence
The following new style Evidence Updates were published recently:

1. Pregnancy and complex social factors: Evidence Update January 2012<http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/evidence-update-3>: focuses on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 110, 'A model for service provision for pregnant women with complex social factors' (2010).

2. Bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia: Evidence Update January 2012<http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/evidence-update-4>: focuses on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 102, 'Management of bacterial meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia in children and young people younger than 16 years in primary and secondary care' (2010).

3. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: Evidence Update February 2012<http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/evidence-update-5>: focuses on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 101, 'Management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in adults in primary and secondary care' (2010).

4. Venous thromboembolism: reducing the risk, Evidence Update February 2012<http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/evidence-update-6>: focuses on a summary of selected new evidence relevant to NICE clinical guideline 92, 'Reducing the risk of venous thromboembolism (deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism) in patients admitted to hospital' (2010).
Evidence Updates reduce the need for individuals, managers and commissioners to search for new evidence and to inform guidance developers of new evidence in their field.

Overview of engagement with academic institutions and healthcare staff
NHS Evidence education manager, Anne Weist, recently met with a number of universities and other national organisations to promote awareness of the service. Activity has included:

 * Presentations to pharmacy students at the Universities of Bath, Reading, Manchester and Liverpool John Moores University.
 * A presentation to medical students at the University of Leicester.
 * A pilot workshop for dietetic students at the University of Hertfordshire.

NHS Evidence purchase of a new Link Resolver and knowledge base

The contract for the provision of the Licence Manager product (http://www.oclc.org/uk/en/knowledgebase/default.htm) has been awarded to OCLC. This is a new product and work is underway to migrate from the current service to the new product. The current service will continue until the new service is ready to go live.

The OCLC Licence Manager provides a number of sub-applications.
a) A knowledge base together with an interface to manage its content - the WorldCat Knowledge Base
b) Inbound and outbound OpenURL linking services
c) Access to some of the exposed services on the OCLC Co-operative Platform

An important component of the new product is Pubget (http://corporate.pubget.com/). This service enables administrators to automate the updating of local e-resource holdings in the knowledge base by taking automatic updates to holdings from e-content suppliers and publishers. NICE encourages all our e-content providers to provide their content through Pubget to maintain accuracy and currency of collections.

Sharing of resources to WorldCat is also available as part of the contract, and we are currently exploring the ways that libraries will be able to make use of this.

Work is underway to move to the new link resolver and knowledge base service, and the current service will continue until the new system is ready to go live. OCLC has begun to create the new administration accounts and will they will migrate the holdings data from the old system to the new. We will provide a date for holdings migration to allow time for managers to update their data. There is a SHALL group working with OCLC on developing training materials and a schedule for training will be available a soon as possible.

Your questions answered...
Question: Can you provide an update on the HDAS work?

Answer: Following on from the comprehensive user research work completed last year, the NHS Evidence design team have been working on improvements to the HDAS service. The new changes will go live in April and include:

* Improvements to the user journey, providing more intuitive search options within HDAS for applying limits to searches.
* An improved user journey providing new features whilst browsing the Thesaurus.
* Help text and tips for how to use HDAS and to explain certain features located within the site.
* New, more flexible options for users changing databases.
