Summer School on Sociology

Sociology department of Eurasian National University (ENU) holds the Summer School in Sociology “Linking between research and teaching practices”, Eurasian National University, Astana, Kazakhstan, June 14-23, 2012.

Among the confirmed lecturers Michael Burawoy (University California at Berkeley), Sarah Amsler (Lincoln University), François Ruegg (Fribourg University), Mikhail Sokolov (European University at Sankt-Petersburg and Higher School of Economics), Pal Tamas (Hungarian Academy of Science).

Today, Kazakhstani universities are on the way to the research university. This new model supposes the dramatic growth of research activity, the total implementation of academic research in the university life and the full involvement of university staff in research activity. Therefore the research university becomes the actuality of various problems connected with the combination of research and teaching activities and the transfer of research/teaching practices.

How is the research/teaching practices linked? What sort of problems does the transfer between research and teaching activity hide? How should we implement own findings in the teaching process? How can various academic “products” (theory, findings, and data) be installed in teaching process? How is the transfer of research practices into educational process organized at a cognitive level? How is this transfer organized at an institutional level? However it is important to note, that progressive techniques of teaching WILL NOT BE a key topic on the summer school.

We will focus on a question: how can we include non-objective components of the academic knowledge (f.e. research findings) in educational process? Our goal to develop the understanding about science is not as an absolute truth and/or the set of technologies, but as complex struggle for objectivities. Answers to these questions, possibly, can be found in the sociology of a science, the sociology of intellectuals and-or the sociology of knowledge.

The Summer School will be organized in interactive format. Invited scholars should present own papers on session and participate actively in discussions.

We invite social scientists (Anthropology, Political Science, Sociology etc.), whose academic interests are linked with these questions, to participate in the summer school. Some sessions will be in English with translation into Kazakh and/or Russian, some session will be held in the Kazakh and Russian languages.

Scholars will be invited for participation in the School on the basis of competition. Interested scholars may apply with the draft of paper (approximately 1000 words in MS Word format) related to the summer school's topic and a short CV. CV may be written in English, Kazakh or Russian. Papers written in English are preferable (all scholars will present their paper in English so we strongly recommend potential participants to send the paper in English).
