The Department of Geography are seeking to appoint a Research Associate (RA) to work on an AHRC funded project entitled 'Revisiting the mid-point of British communities: a study of affect, affordance and connectivity in Glossop. The project explores the nature and formation of senses of community in the town of Glossop, a settlement that lay at the centre of the rural-urban continuum established by Frankenberg in his book Communities in Britain that is widely heralded as a synthesis of classic community studies. The project will investigate how communities, and community studies, have changed since this study, drawing particularly of recent conceptualisations of affect, affordance and relational inter-connection. The project will involve both historical archival work and contemporary research involving in-depth interviews, focus groups, community arts, GIS and digital mobile and web 2.0 technologies. The project will end with the creation of a public exhibition of the research within the town of Glossop. The research assistant will be primarily involved in the generation and analysis of date for this project, and must have clear evidence of experience of field research within communities and qualitative data analysis, as well as being able to work independently and as part of a team.

The closing date for this post is midnight on 3 April 2012, with interviews likely to take place in the week commencing 19 April 2012.
