Cataloguer for Britten Thematic Catalogue Project

£12,000 for 6 months, fixed term contract
35 hours p/w (£24,000 pro rata)
We are willing to consider flexible working arrangements

The Britten–Pears Foundation, based in Aldeburgh, Suffolk, is a Designated collection holding the archives of composer Benjamin Britten. The Britten Thematic Catalogue (BTC) is a major online resource which provides details of all of Britten’s works, from his very early days as a child composer through to his final pieces (see www.brittenproject.org). It was originally established as a collaborative project with the University of East Anglia and sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, but since 2009 it has been run solely from the Britten-Pears Foundation.

One of the principal aims of the BTC is to provide full details of Britten’s music manuscripts. During the first 3 years of the project Britten’s juvenilia was fully catalogued, followed by a substantial number of the large-scale mature works. There are a number of Britten manuscripts still to be catalogued and we are looking for an experienced Cataloguer. The material to be catalogued includes music manuscripts (drafts and fair copies), text sources, and post-publication revisions. Details of Britten’s works are also entered manually into the BTC’s content management system, and the post will also involve some data entry using this system (training will be provided).

This fixed term post (for 6 months) would ideally suit a qualified archivist with experience of cataloguing to item level. A knowledge of classical music is desirable. Training in the use of CALM will be provided if necessary.
