Bioinformatics Scientist
Energy Crops
Rothamsted Research wishes to recruit a Bioinformatics Scientist who will be
responsible for developing and supporting bioinformatics resources to
support our crop genetics research into the improvement of willow as a
bioenergy crop. Duties will include the analysis and interpretation of Next
Generation Sequencing datasets from transcriptome and genome sequencing
projects for willow, the development of data analysis and data integration
pipelines and creating web-based tools for delivering results internally and
externally to the broader research community.

The person appointed will work closely with crop scientists from Rothamsted
and collaborators in other organisations. The appointee will contribute to
the development of bioinformatics tools within a small team responsible for
crop informatics projects and will interact with other bioinformaticians in
other crop science centres.

Applicants should be a postgraduate biological scientists or computer
scientist with significant previous experience maintaining and developing
Bioinformatics software and web-enabled database applications in a Unix
environment. Candidates trained in biology must have at least an MSc in
Bioinformatics or related subject. Non-biologists must have experience
working with biologists and programing with datasets from molecular biology
or genetics. The ideal candidate would be competent in at least two of the
following programming languages: Java, Python, Perl, SQL, PHP. Prior
experience with MySQL will be an advantage. It is expected that successful
candidates will be able to demonstrate that they can deliver practical
bioinformatics software solutions and have the initiative and communication
skills necessary to participate in a complex and demanding project involving
collaborators across multiple sites.

The post is an indefinite full time appointment with a starting salary
normally in the region of £26,610 to £29,566 per annum.
