Hello,

I wonder if anyone can offer advice or share their experience of the different types of devices used for audio interpretation.

Colchester & Ipswich Museums are doing a redevelopment of Colchester Castle funded by the HLF and we are looking at different options for offering interpretation to visitors. One option is to offer audio guides as a mobile phone app which can also be uploaded from our website but we are also thinking about using more traditional audio guide handsets or just having audio information booths at fixed points around the museum e.g. sound shower directional speakers.

It would be great to find out what forms of technology other museums and heritage services are using to deliver audio interpretation, especially if you are trialling anything new or innovative.

Any info would be helpful but especially on practical issues such as:

  • Durability & reliability
  • Is the device free to visitors or is there a hire charge, deposit etc
  • layering the information e.g. Children’s version, having more options for extra info on objects etc
  • Using different languages
  • Take up and usage by visitors/ feedback from visitors
  • Cost
  • Usefulness

Many thanks

Ciara

Hi,

Can anyone help us identify the object in the attached photos? Perhaps you have something similar in your collections? We have several theories but no conclusive answer. The stem is hollow. Any suggestions gratefully received!

Thanks,

Cat
