Urban Studies PhD Pathway

Urban Studies at University College London has the opportunity to submit a candidate for one of 6 awards, known as ‘pool awards’, allocated via a competitive process open to all ESRC-recognised departments and inter-departmental pathways at UCL.

This will be for a start date of September 2012. The studentship will normally cover fees and include a maintenance stipend over three years. Part-time students are also accepted. 

 

The following will be essential:

• ESRC recognised Masters degree or equivalent research training.
• 3 years of prior UK residency. Other EU students acceptable but will receive only fees.
• A research topic that is clearly identifiable as urban-related.
• Evidence of first class ability at undergraduate/postgraduate levels.

Cities are now a critical focus for research, policy-making and public debate. More than half the global population now lives in cities and according to the United Nations this number is set to rise to three-quarters by the year 2050. The scale and complexity of these developments necessitate the development of innovative and interdisciplinary modes of analysis that can address critical challenges and influence debates both within and outside the academy.

 

By taking the Urban Studies MSc at UCL you will be better able to understand these debates and apply your own knowledge in the course of your career - whether this is geared towards further research and writing or through an enriched practical and professional contribution to the urban arena.

 

The MSc draws on teaching and research from across four UCL faculties (Arts and Humanities; the Bartlett School of the Built Environment; Engineering Sciences; and Social and Historical Sciences). Students take three core modules in "Urban imaginations", "Cities, space and power" and “Urban practices” and choose further courses from over forty optional modules. These range from research methods training to specialist modules such as “Community participation in city strategies”, "Creative cities", “Comparative urbanism”, “London”, “Public space and the city”, "Asian cities” and "Post-colonial theory and the multicultural city."

 

Entry requirements are the equivalent of a first or upper-second class degree. Full time, part time and flexible study options are available.
