Dear Members of the Imaging Projects. Please see below for an earlier answer to Kurt's email. Dear Kurt, Thanks for including the Southampton contingent in the recent email. We're new to both the Euro and UK imaging consortia but believe that they are both excellent initiatives and wish to contribute. As newbie to both the consortia and, in some ways, the UK I would very much like to contribute where useful. I would agree with you that aligning with the Euro initiative makes inherent sense and I doubt that more would be lost than we would gain. It does seem important however to maintain a national perspective as this country has many strengths of its own. As a representative of Southampton I can see some valuable input to several of the 8 sectors, particularly in access to ALM and innovative ALM as well as user access and training. We are strongly represented in these areas. I have had experience running an NIH technology research resource in the US for 20 years and there is significant overlap in the management structure of these resources and the aspirations of the Eurobioimaging consortium. So, delighted to help. Prof. Peter J.S. I think it's a good time to review our organisation, and it's probably a good idea aligning them where appropriate. Most of them are actually aligned already, see below. When we started with this, Eurobioimaging was still fresh and BioimagingUK a loose extension of the facility managers meeting, so the work packages are a bit random. And as previous discussions point out, they are to some degree random anyway - training is linked to career, access to data management and legal issues, everything to finance and sustainability, to name but a few. And therefore, it's even more random who is working where, most of us are interested (and involved) in almost everything every day, but the limit is our time. Because of the limit of time and people, I suggest we use this opportunity to review the Working Groups and minimise their number. High-throughput might fit into 'innovative technologies' or 'data', for the analysis side; some might just stay (e.g. EM?); Career is between training and finance planning, but we could propose to extend the EBI package 'Training' to 'Training & Career'. Any other ideas? BioImagingUK is organised around 14 Work Groups, which only vaguely correspond to the eubi WPs. i think there should be better alignment between the two. obviously we dont need workgroups on the 5 strategic areas in the top half of the graphic (anyone for legal governance & ethical issues?). however the 8 technical working groups in the bottom half of the graphic are the heart of the initiative, and i think we should have bioimaginguk equivalents for each of them. we already have "training," and approximately have "data storeage and analysis". but the remaining 12 of our WGs are randomly associated with the remaining 6 eubi WPs. why do i think this is a problem? well, in a nutshell, i think we will be fundamentally more effective at working with, influencing, and implementing EuroBioImaging if we organise ourselves around the same work packages. i'm sure other people will think differently, and would really like to have some discussion on the pros and cons of these two different approaches to the organisation of bioimagingUK. kurt .
