Dear Rhys
I read your comments about wanting something linear  but which could still be moved around and manipulated 
for presentations (rather than hard copy prints) Prezi might be useful
(Its good fun  if you havent tried it before and in my opinion has potential for many uses)
also there is a free basic general use and a free full edu use versions
