Dear All,

Apologies for cross-posting .

I was contacted at the beginning of the year by the Library and Museum at Freemasons` Hall here in Leicester.

They have recently acquired a ‘marble’ table [picture should be attached and the quotation marks around marble herein, are my inflection rather than from the original request].

It depicts masonic designs and symbols – these they understand, but they are wishing to know more about the materials from which the table is made.

I have paraphrased much of their request, with all known information and people they have approached.

Essentially they are looking for someone to visit and provide more information on the stone and provenance of said stone.

The table was formerly in a private home in Nuneaton, but they are unable to contact the vendor, and so have been seeking the help of various museums.

The Victoria and Albert concluded the work was not Maltese, while the Buxton Museum where there is a considerable collection of Derbyshire ware think the table top was not made there.

The current advice is that they need to identify the various types of marble and semi precious stone worked into the design. Then “Once we have an idea of their origin we may be able to piece togther the provenance of the table as a whole.”

If you have any ideas as to who may be available to help, please do let me know.

Many thanks for your help,

Vicky
