Lesley will be taking over from Liz Stephens, the RCM current President, from 2nd April 2012 and we look forward to working with her.
Lesley has practised as a midwife for over 32 years, in both community and hospitals in the UK and in Canada. At present Lesley practices is in the Cotswold Maternity Service in Chipping Norton Oxon part of the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals NHS Trust. She is also Visiting Professor King’s College London and the University of Technology Sydney and University of Sydney. An Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Midwives, and President of the Maternity and Newborn Forum Section of the Royal Society of Medicine, Lesley also belongs to the Association of Radical Midwives and Medical Justice.
Lesley's experience in practice, management of large services (at Director level), academic work, representation of midwifery on national committees, and international experience, has given her a deep, rounded, understanding of midwifery. She has also published extensively (see for example The New Midwifery co-edited with Rona McCandlish).
Lesley has always worked to develop strong effective midwifery and maternity services that give women, babies and families the best start in life, recognising that the birth of the baby is the birth of the mother and family. Midwives play an important role in society and this should be recognised.
