Getting Started in Research and Evaluation

A Library and Information Research Group (LIRG) workshop in collaboration with Health Libraries Group (HLG) and HEALER

Have you ever thought about doing a research project or evaluating a new service, but…
-         are not sure how to go about it?
-         don’t know which methods to use?
-         cant see how it is relevant to your practice?

Then LIRG, HLG and HEALER have a workshop for you

This one day workshop, facilitated by experienced researchers, is designed to help practitioners get started in research or evaluation.  Participants are encouraged to consider the similarities and differences between research and evaluation, the challenges, and the practical considerations that need to be addressed.  They will be encouraged to consider the valuable contribution research projects can have even if they are small in scale.  They will also be introduced to quantitative and qualitative approaches, find out when to use each and what may be feasible when. The session will be practical, full of tips and will provide a user friendly overview of the research and evaluation process to help participants to think about and plan potential projects, as well as provide opportunities to ask specific questions and gain feedback about their own research ideas.

Who should attend: Practitioners and students.  It is particularly suitable for those who are interested in doing research or evaluation, but need some user friendly and practical help to get started. The event carries the CILIP Seal of Recognition.

Learning outcomes:
·        To understand the similarities and differences between research
and evaluation
·        To understand the practical considerations which need to be
addressed when planning research or evaluation projects
·        To understand the difference between quantitative and qualitative
approaches
