The Publishers Association, the Centre for Publishing at University College London and EDItEUR announce the next Digital Publishing Forum.

Measuring the Reader

Wednesday 15 February 2012, 4-6pm, Malet Place Eng 1.02, UCL, London WC1, followed by a reception.

This first seminar of 2012 will be chaired by John Akeroyd, Honorary Research Fellow, UCL and Director, Information Reports Ltd.

Speakers include Martha Sedgwick, Senior Manager Online Products, Sage Publications, Stephen Morgan, Managing Director of web company Squiz UK, Dr Angela Conyers, Research Fellow at Evidence Base at Birmingham City University and Eela Devani, Digital Business Development Director, Bloomsbury Publishing.

One of the great benefits of digital delivery is the ability to seriously monitor and evaluate how readers are interacting with products and systems, from a deep-level look at actions taken on screen to cumulative analysis of patterns and extent of use. This kind of feedback can be used to improve product delivery, enhance take-up and sales and inform development of new products. There is a whole new industry underlying what has become known as web analysis, and user evaluations and analysis have become common across the sector. This forum will look at several case studies of how user metrics are being used, and what they mean for service improvement and product development.

Martha Sedgwick will describe the work she has done at Sage and before that at Macmillan where she developed a content delivery platform to host online books and journals and a usage statistics assessment tool, ScholarlyStats; Stephen Morgan will present on Squiz' web analysis system, based on Google analytics and how it is being used to improve the presenting and delivery of two e-journals; Angela Conyers, who is also a former university librarian, will talk to her research on COUNTER usage statistics and the measured benefits or otherwise of big deals; and Eela Devani will present a case study to show the impact that Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) can have on the performance of a site.

These friendly, informal events allow ample time for questions and discussion, followed by drinks and an opportunity for further networking and discussion. The seminar fee is £46.00 for members of the Publishers Association, CILIP, SCL and other library staff members, and £92.00 for non-members.
