Important to get these admin areas right of course but my advice to a resident of Burton-on-Trent, or anywhere else, interested in sites in their locality would be to use the location button and search for sites within 1km or whatever.  After all for anything earlier than the 10th century or so the admin area has no relevance whatsoever.

Having now checked it find Burton upon Trent to be an interesting example of the ‘admin area’ problem.

Burton is a non-parished area in East Staffs borough in Staffordshire. I seem to recall that from 1850-60 it was the smallest town with the status of a Borough in England. It lost that status sometime in the C20th, and the county boundary was jiggled so that the suburbs on the east side of the Trent were transferred from Derbyshire to Staffordshire.

So, if I were a resident of Burton wanting to see what archaeology there was in my area and with a none too clear idea of admin boundaries, I might type ‘Burton’ into the admin area. It comes up with a lengthy list of Burtons, but either ‘Burton-upon-Trent’ nor Burton-on-Trent’ is not amongst them.

Beyond that there is the lottery that is the ‘place/site name/name’. Do I insert hyphens? Do I use ‘upon’ or ‘on’?

I suggest we just pretend that's not happening (-;

No, seriously, I suppose I should have said 'Admin area address' as opposed to 'postal address'. Indeed, the two can be quite different.

However, anyone looking Burton-upon-Trent (or any other town) would have to use the other search box, either Place/Site Name/Street Name or the Map Search, as it's not a parish or district (or is it?!). That search doesn't display any additional auto complete as you type - but perhaps it could, and this could be the (alternate) Royal Mail Address?

Hi Louisa,

Good point, but what happens when the postal address places a whole town somewhere other than the admin county?

Burton upon Trent is in Staffs, but has a ‘DE’ postal address.
