Developing Clinical Guidelines, May 8-10, 2012, Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London

http://www.rcog.org.uk/events/clinical-guideline-development-course

The enormous quantity of research evidence produced each year (studies and reviews) makes it impossible for users of health research and health-care decision makers to evaluate and keep up-to-date with the new evidence. Clinical guidelines have a vital role in providing reliable overviews of research and making evidence-based recommendation.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines are internationally regarded as the most advanced in terms of scope and methodology. They incorporate evidence-based effectiveness research, cost-effectiveness analyses, and clinical and lay consensus to reach recommendations about health and social care. The National Collaborating Centre for Women’s and Children’s Health (NCC-WCH) produces guidelines related to women and children health on behalf of NICE.

The aim of this RCOG/NCC-WCH led course is to provide participants with an understanding and practical experience of the steps involved in the planning and development of clinical guidelines. By the end of the course participants will be equipped with the necessary skills to produce clinical guidelines.

At the end of the course the students should be able to:
Plan a clinical guideline
Develop a care pathway and clinical questions
Interpret the results of systematic reviews
Interpret results of health economics papers
Incorporate clinical experience into evidence-based recommendations
Write evidence-based recommendations

Who should attend the course?
Systematic reviewers, guideline developers and healthcare professionals and providers interested in learning the key concepts involved in the design and production of high quality clinical guidelines. It will be assumed that participants will have prior experience of conducting systematic reviews. Participants should also have a good command of English.
