I would think it would be useful to quote statements that you want to 
criticize. This would at least suggest that the statements were made.

One poet in particular, in the small town I'm from, simply could not abide 
any success by the other writers, no matter how small. I remember when a 
friend of mine got an essay published in a journal of reputation. This was 
the first time he'd had an essay published with any prominence. The jealous 
writer just couldn't stand it. According to him, my friend had "sold out." 
There was barely any point in talking with him about it.
