The Development of the use of Statistics in the Census and the Future of the Census 

Professor Ian Diamond, Principal of the University of Aberdeen

Abstract: 

This talk provides a brief history of the census, looks at the development of the acceptance that census counts were subject to error, and describes strategies used to make census estimates.  It then places such estimates in the context of the debate about the future of the census and discusses a number of options.
