An Australian Postgraduate Awards (Industry) are available in the discipline of Archaeology at the University of Western Australia. The successful candidate will work with archaeologists from ANU and UWA in the central Kimberley region of WA. Previous research at sites such as Carpenters Gap 1 and Riwi has shown that the region was first occupied at least 45,000 years ago. Fieldwork and other research expenses will be supported by the ARC project. Three topics are available: 1. Application of geoarchaeological techniques to better understand site formation processes at these sites. 2. Identification and interpretation of faunal remains from excavated sites to better understand past subsistence strategies and environments over the long occupation period. 3. Identification and interpretation of macroplant remains from excavated sites to better understand past subsistence strategies and environments over the long occupation. A field season to excavate a number of sites is planned for mid-year in 2012 and the successful candidate will be required to spend up to three months of the year in the field in 2012. The university also offers limited conference and research funds during the 3 year candidature. Applicants should have a research background in archaeology with a minimum of a 2A honours degree or equivalent. Previous experience in the topic area would be an advantage.
