Lectureship in Urban Engineering Systems

Centre for Transport Studies
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Imperial College London

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London invites applications
from outstanding candidates for a Lecturership in the area of Urban Engineering Systems, based in the
Centre for Transport Studies. The Centre for Transport Studies (www.imperial.ac.uk/cts) is one of the
largest and most successful transport groups in Europe, with a wide ranging and high quality
programme of research and teaching activities, and is the focus for transport research throughout the
College.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering has an outstanding international reputation and
has consistently achieved the highest possible rating in all national assessments of research quality. In
the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise, it was the top-rated civil engineering department in the
UK; 95% of its staff being judged as world-leading or internationally excellent.

The focus of this post is on developing programmes of engineering research and teaching that take a
holistic view of urban systems including the built and natural environment and human activity and
behaviour and the relationship of these processes to the planning, management and operation of
underlying networked infrastructures including those serving transport, communications, buildings,
energy, water and wastes. Potential areas of work include:

* Interdependence and resilience of urban systems and infrastructures.

* Mitigation of the effects of extreme events, including natural hazards and human threats, on civil
infrastructure systems.

* Adaptation and renewal of legacy infrastructure and processes in urban environments.

* Application of smart systems and technologies to the design, management and operation of urban
systems and infrastructure

We particularly welcome candidates with a strong academic background in transport engineering within
the context of urban systems, but also with a vision and ambition to undertake work that takes an
integrated view of such systems and with the personal qualities to enable successful multidisciplinary
collaboration.

An application form and further particulars for the post are available online via
