New: Confirmed Programme of Speakers

“Meanings, markets and magic”
2012 Adventure Conference

Dates: 16th/17th February 2012
Venue: School of Adventure Studies, Fort William
The Centre for Recreation and Tourism Research, at the School of Adventure Studies, West Highland College UHI (http://www.whc.uhi.ac.uk/school-adventure-studies), and Lochaber Outdoor Learning Partnership are pleased to announce that they are now taking bookings for the 2012 Adventure Conference.

The conference aims to bring together leading academics, entrepreneurs and practitioners working in the outdoor adventure world to exchange ideas and confront the issues emerging for this exciting and distinctive niche of leisure, tourism and education in the early 21st century. Dr Paul Beedie and Dr Carl Cater, both leading academics in the adventure tourism sector, are the keynote speakers. We are delighted to welcome speakers from across the globe – from Greece to Canada and from New Zealand to Nepal.

This event will take place on the 16th/17th February 2012 in Fort William, Scotland under the shadow of Ben Nevis on the west coast of Scotland. It has been rescheduled to coincide with the Fort William Mountain Festival (http://www.mountainfilmfestival.co.uk/) taking place from 16th to 19th February. The Festival is a wonderful celebration of Scottish mountain culture and brings together a range of adventure workshops, films and presentations from some of the world’s foremost adventurers, as well as the Best of Banff World Tour.

The Programme is available at:

The two-day conference costs £250, including conference dinner and a free ticket for the Mountain Festival event on the evening of the 17th, in which Bob Shepton will be recounting his breathtaking sailing and big wall climbing expedition to Greenland. Students and industry practitioners are eligible for a reduced rate of £100, or £75 for one day.
