Also I wouldn't ignore specialist production by convents as a means of financial support. I don't see why such items wouldn't also have found their way into shops if and when there was demand. I imagine many monasteries had in-house production of such items, as they did for habits and the like.

The Trappists at Tre Fontane in Rome, so I was told, is the place to go to buy a knotted-cord discipline, but I did not investigate (there's nothing like this on their modern website, only liqueurs). -- Paul
