medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture I know nothing about the Sarum Breviary proper readings, other than having helped a bit with some translations of the Latin readings at Matins. But in the Roman Breviary, you won't find any feasts at all in the sanctoral cycle between 22 Dec and 13 Jan. The few saints celebrated during these dates are found integrated into the temporal cycle rather than the sanctoral cycle, because the temporal so often supplants them in whole or in part, and because the temporal cycle at that point is driven by fixed rather than a movable dates. That said, the RB does indeed have proper sanctoral readings for the handful of saints celebrated during this period (i.e., Stephen, John, Thomas Becket, Sylvester, the commemorations of Telesphorus and Hyginus).

Dear medieval-religion colleagues,

What is the liturgical logic for having feasts between Thomas the Apostle (21 December) and Wulfstan (20 January) use only generic common readings for, e.g., confessors or virgins, rather than specific ones? I can grasp why there might not be specific readings in the days immediately preceding and following a major feast like Christmas, or a major quadragesima like the Easter Lent, but this period seems odd to me.

Thanks for helping me to understand this.

Best wishes, George
