Now that would be lovely. Maybe we could set up an HER national job swap club for those of us who fancy a change.... ;- )

Have a good weekend

I can't imagine dealing with that many new sites, but then as you say - you are a very rural area and we are a small urban unitary authority, so almost everything is development / planning led and almost entirely dealt with by excavation. I'm now sat here dreaming of rural Scotland instead of a noisy city centre outside the window.

Hey ho...... Have a good weekend

Rachel

I guess it's a difference of scale then. I added more than 1000 new monument records to the HER last year. How does that compare with other areas? Our problem is that so many areas of Highland have never been surveyed (often rarely even visited) and there are literally thousands of unrecorded sites out there. There must be other areas of the country like this, but maybe they're being left alone rather than developed with forestry and windfarms galore? (Feeling sorry for myself). But then we get few excavations and don't have to deal with complex urban stratigraphy. Horses for courses I guess.

ASPIRE has stalled at the moment Nick and I think a decision will be taken soon about its future. I have developed my own database here that some of our community groups use to submit structured information to the HER (new sites and information to add to existing records). It works pretty well - I just wish contractors were so amenable!

Hi Sylvina

we ask for PDF reports routinely, but not any other data digitally. We do sometimes get digital data in these formats from larger projects, but so far, these have been ones sorted out before my time, so am not sure what was agreed and how, or how we'll deal with it when we get it.

I have been keeping one eye on ASPIRE http://www.aspire-resource.info/ (sort of) to see if that would help with this issue when we get round to it, but this seems to have stalled

best wishes

Subject: Digital data from archaeological contractors

Hello everyone

A Friday afternoon question for you, as I sit here quietly tearing my hair out. To what extent do other archaeology services/HERs require archaeological contractors to supply them with digital data? A couple of years back we revised our reporting standards for developer-funded work to include an overt requirement not only for digital copies of reports, but also shapefiles of event and site extents, digital site gazetteers, digital photos and photographic registers. This allows us to streamline the process of getting information into the HER - crucial given our resource limitations - and prevents duplication and double keying of information.

It seems plain to us that reporting needs to move with the times and that the supply of digital information is something that should be standard in this day and age. However two years on I am still banging my head against a brick wall with many archaeological contractors who seem to have difficulty understanding even the basics of GIS or appreciating the benefits of supplying data to us digitally. I'm now wondering if we really are the only HER in the country with these types of requirements - surely not?

Thoughts? What do others do?

Thanks
Sylvina
