Call for papers: RGS-IBG Annual Conference 2012, 3-5 July, University of Edinburgh

Session convenors:
Dr Rebecca Finkel, Queen Margaret University
Dr Catherine M. Matheson, Queen Margaret University

Sponsored by the Women and Geography Study Group (WGSG)

Session Title: Gender Issues, Global Events and the Sustainability of (Safe) Space

In keeping with the broader conference theme of security, this session will focus on the gendered and spatialised safety issues surrounding global events, which are defined as large, symbolically-significant events that are international in size and scope, meaning that they attract international audiences, international media and international performers or athletes. Situating gender and feminist discourses within urban and cultural geography and events management contexts, this session will explore the impacts large-scale events have on the safety, representation, objectification, marginalisation and identity-formation of women participants, audiences, service providers and vulnerable groups. Framing these contexts in social sustainability, emphasis will be on the policy and praxis of global events and their relationships with gender-based narratives. As an emerging area of interest and research, this session has the potential to highlight innovative work in the field and to further critical thinking and understanding as it relates to these cross-cutting subjects.

Possible presentations for sessions could focus on:
- The spatialised safety issues of sex workers during mega sporting events
- The controversies surrounding the objectification of women during the Miss World Pageant and the future sustainability of these kinds of events
- The nexus of danger/empowerment faced in Tahrir Square or other international protests and movements
- The role and representation of women in high-profile conferences and summits
- The intersection of social sustainability and spatialised feminism
- Research methodologies and ethical issues
- Other relevant and current issues and conceptualisations pertaining to this topic

Abstracts of 250 words (including the paper title and author's contact details) should be sent to Dr Rebecca Finkel ([log in to unmask]) by Friday, 27 January 2012.
