London ESOL Research Network (LERN): Call for contributors for March 28th seminar

Routes into Research for ESOL professionals

Are you currently conducting research in ESOL related issues? Are you interested in finding out more about the different research projects that ESOL professionals are undertaking? Are you attracted perhaps by the idea of doing research, but don’t know how to get started? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, please join us for a thought provoking evening at the Institute of Education on the 28th March.

Writing in 2006, Celia Roberts commented that it was a timely and exciting moment to be working in adult ESOL research, though she noted that historically, adult ESOL had been more practice than research driven. We would suggest that 6 years on, these comments still ring true, albeit in the current climate of government scrutiny where public and political attitudes and policies on immigration and the economy have increasingly become the main drivers of ESOL policy, curricula and funding.

This seminar of the London ESOL Research Network seeks to contribute to and encourage the development of a thriving research community, linking theoretical work with practice. Contributions are invited from ESOL professionals who are involved in, or have recently completed a research project (perhaps in their place of work, or as part of a doctoral or masters course) who would be willing to share details their project and their experience with the wider ESOL community. Contributors will be asked to:

§ Explain how they chose their project, with a brief biographical note linking this work to their own education or work route
§ Outline the research and their own role in it
§ Be available for informal discussion in an open forum

The intention is to build awareness of, and participation in contemporary research, both inside and outside academia, disseminate this work, build networks of those with similar interests, and break down barriers for those who are interested in conducting research projects and are looking for support and information.
