Subject: Potential Teacher Positions available at JACT Greek Summer School

The Joint Association of Classical Teachers Greek Summer School invites you to: SEE WHAT TEACHING CAN OFFER We urgently need more Classics teachers, and for those who love their Classics and have an aptitude for teaching, no career is more fulfilling. To encourage those of you who may be thinking along these lines but are not entirely certain whether teaching is for you, this scheme is offering 'potential teachers' the chance to spend time on the JACT Ancient Greek Summer School at Bryanston School. There you will have the opportunity to observe intensive Greek teaching, and perhaps become more directly involved in the lessons. Undergraduates about to embark on their final year and postgraduates are particularly invited to partake in this scheme. The Summer School is a residential course taking place at Bryanston School, Blandford, Dorset from Sunday 29th July until Saturday 11th August. At the School students are assigned to tutorial groups of 7-9 members. All formal teaching is done in these groups, and each group stays with its tutor throughout the course. The Director of Studies assigns students to groups on the basis of their level of attainment in Greek language. Two Potential Teacher places are on offer for the 2012 Summer School. Accommodation is on-site: board and lodging are provided free of charge, and reasonable travel expenses will be paid. Potential teachers will attend the school from Sunday 5th August until Saturday 11th August. They will be attached to an individual tutor and his/her group, and will receive advance briefing about their group's programme of study. They will attend group teaching sessions, observing and taking part as seems appropriate. They might take the tutor's role in occasional sessions or part-sessions. They will be able to offer students individual assistance at other times. They will also be offered the chance to observe classes in groups other than the one to which they are assigned. They will be members of the teaching staff, a group of some 40 classicists with collective experience of many universities and schools, with whom they will be encouraged to discuss professional matters. At the end of their visit they will have a meeting with their assigned tutor, the Course Director and the Director of Studies at which the experience will be reviewed. Applicants must have reached at least the end of the penultimate year of their undergraduate course by the time of the summer school. Applicants must also have completed two years’ study of Greek at university by the time of the summer school. Application is by email to Mary Staniforth([log in to unmask]). Applicants should give their name, university department, postal address and telephone contact number, and attach a CV and covering letter. The deadline for application is 15 March. Applicants must also ensure that two academic referees write in support of their application to [log in to unmask] by 15 March. Applicants should expect to hear the outcome of their application by the end of April. Before final acceptance, they will be required to submit to a CRB check. Applications will be reviewed by a panel consisting of Mary Staniforth (Bradfield College; JACT GSS PT co-ordinator); Chris Burnand (Abingdon School; JACT GSS Director of Studies); and Catherine Steel (University of Glasgow; JACT GSS Director). In addition to possessing appropriate academic experience and qualifications, successful candidates will demonstrate their commitment to and aptitude for a teaching career.
