An interesting scientist and science research history story related to fields of biochemistry research is
A Feeling for the Organism:  the Life and Work of Barbara McClintock, by Evelyn Fox Keller.

Thanks Colin.  Did you mean the Double Helix by Watson? (sorry , the threads are hard to unravel) I am tempted to get a copy for myself to read, but the reviews  say that it can be of a tough going at  A-level? - also apparently there are a couple of versions out there (some with pictures, anabridged version), so I will need to try and find the right copy.

Hi

This is still in print (£6.34 from a certain river-named online seller). It
was on my pre-A-level reading list and was instrumental in making me want to
study even more chemistry. I've read it several times, and it always gets
read in one sitting. It has all the pace and excitement of a Wilbur Smith
adventure tale, and as Chris says, shows the wartier sides of science too,
which to me makes it all the more real and human. Perhaps this links to the
thread on engaging students with science through stories of struggle? You
can't beat a good story to capture people's interest.

Cheers

James Watson's 'The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the
Structure of DNA'? Has the added advantage of showing lots of the warts of
science and having been a very controversial book (e.g. for his sexism, esp.
towards Rosalind Franklin). Not sure it's in print at the moment but there
must be lots of copies knocking about in secondhand bookshops if not.

Subject: [PSCI-COM] Biochemistry reading at A-level

Hi all,

Does anyone have suggestions for a book that I could recommend to an A-level
student interested in pursuing a career in Biochemistry? I really enjoy
reading but sadly my reading interests seem not to have streched to
non-fiction science books!

So far I have:

The Lives of a Cell: Notes of a Biology Watcher - Lewis Thomas

How We Live and Why We Die: the secret lives of cells - Lewis Wolpert

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks - Rebecca Skloot

Would love to hear of any more additions to this list - having been thinking
of putting it up the list on my website so it is accessible to all.

Thanks,
Zara
