Thank you for enhancing my clearly
patchy knowledge. (One of the advantages of plunging in with ill-informed
comments is that then SOMEONE knowledgeable IMMEDIATELY puts the record straight
- to everyone's advantage.)
Can you clarify for me two points
-
Would the package of Mattins + Litany +
Ante Communion + a 2(?) hour sermon have been general in the 18th C or would you
have been more likely to find it in an urban or a rural church ? Or simply where
the parson was conscientious ?.
Was the afternoon service sans sermon
Evensong ?

You comments about the morning service are not quite correct: The Morning
service would have been of Mattins, (often followed by the Litany as the
Prayer Book Rubrics demanded) then Ante-Communion (The Communion Service down
to the Prayer for the Church Militant) plus a sermon, This would have taken up
quite a chunk of the morning, especially since sermons then were not of the
length of today!
There would also have been an afternoon service, usually without
sermon.
