The Role

 

The post holder will work with the rest of the Web Development team to develop and support key University web based and mobile systems. They will also manage small agile software projects, including creating tasks for other members of the team, monitoring progress and ensuring delivery of quality web based applications. 

 

In this role, you will be given the opportunity to use your individual strengths to become the specialist within the team in an area of your choice (e.g. web design, web development, mobile development, Apache server configuration, MySQL optimisation, etc.).

 

The Person

 

We are looking for someone with a passion for web application development and strong technical skills, including some of the following: PHP, HTML, CSS, MySQL, Apache server and/or Java. The successful candidate will most likely have a degree in Computer Science or related discipline and have significant web development experience. 

 

Experience of Agile software development practises would be an advantage, but we would also like to hear from developers with the enthusiasm to learn and develop these skills on the job. You will be expected to be a Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) now or be willing to train to this level within your first year in the post.

The Department

 

Information Services – Web Development Team 

 

The Web Development Team is comprised of 6 people who are responsible for development and smooth running of key web based systems such as the Student portal, Online payment system, Clearing system, Blogs, Forums, mobile applications, campus maps and SharePoint based sites. They are also enthusiastic users of open source software such as WordPress, Drupal and uPortal.

 

Over the last year, the Web Development team has adopted Agile software development methodologies and has run several successful projects using these techniques. They are looking to further develop and improve within the team by experimenting with different Agile practices and techniques.

 

The Web Development Team is part of the IT Development Section in Information Services whose remit is to plan, develop and maintain the University’s IT infrastructure; the corporate, learning/collaboration and web systems; and related consultancy and implementation services. The section works closely with Customer Support providing ‘third-line’ support for systems.
