Panel: European Literary and Learned Societies 1400-1700

In the context of:

The Italian Academies 1525-1700: the First Intellectual Networks of Early Modern Europe - International Conference: London 17/18 September 2012

Within the context of the Italian Academies Conference that will take place in London, contributions are invited for a special panel dedicated to Literary and Learned societies across Europe in the early modern period. Following the revival of classical scholarship, Academies were created in Italy between the fifteenth and sixteenth century. Subsequently, they were imitated abroad. However, research has shown that other institutions were created with a similar scope and different features. Compagnie della Calza in Fifteenth century Venice, Academies and Justas in Sixteenth and Seventeenth century Spain. Chambers of Rhetoric in Fifteenth and Sixteenth century Netherlands, spread the classical heritage through theatrical performances.

However, such organizations are normally studied within their own municipal or national context.

In view of possible future collaborations, the scope of this panel is to bring together scholars working on similar societies across Europe and up to 1700 – papers on societies devoted to scientific investigation in a broad sense would also be considered.

What was the nature of such societies? Where did they exist? What were they called? How many members did they count? Were they protected by authorities? What was their output?

The organizers of this panel welcome proposals on Western, Central, and Eastern European literary and learned societies, in view of an open debate about informal, yet formalized groups, devoted to the spreading of knowledge, either thorough literature, or performance, or visual arts.
