italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies

SoundAffects: Listening to Italian Cinema
Starting with the notion of film as audio-visualmedium and creation, this session invites investigations of the role of the soundtrackin Italian cinema, from the dawn of sound film to the present day. By soundtrackwe intend not simply the traditional music-track but the noise-track, and thevoice/dialogue-track. This opens the conversation to aesthetic, political andtheoretical discourses of aurality and orality in film and modernity in theirintersection with technological developments and the creation of new modes oflistening and perceiving. The session encourages papers that focus on nationalspecificities in the cultural and technical modes of soundtrack production, andpost-production in their relation with/to the image production. Listening to Italian cinema can track, amongothers, the following generic points: the musical ear, the linguistic question(dialects/standard Italian/foreign languages), the creative synergy of filmdirector/music composer/sound arranger, the representation of national identityand imaginary as sound-scape, cinema as audiovisual poetry.
