Call for papers

 

Revealing Italy : Italy Re-veiled

 

Keynote Speaker: Prof. Claudio Fogu (UC Santa Barbara).

On behalf of the graduate students of the Department of Italian Studies at Brown University and the Italian Section of the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University, We are pleased to announce the fifth joint Graduate Student Conference for Italian Studies, to be held on Friday March 2nd and Saturday March 3rd, 2012 at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

This conference will investigate the possible declinations of the concepts of veiling and unveiling, covering and uncovering in relation to Italy. What role do these dynamics play in the Italian context? In what ways do they unfold in Italian history, literature, politics, art, philosophy, cinema, theater, etc?

Proposals may address, but are not restricted to, the following topics:

·       Theater Arts and Performance

·       Carnival

·       Cryptography

·       Censorship and Surveillance

·       Gender and Sexuality

·       Identity (Construction, Imaginary, Representation, Misrepresentation, Nicodemism, etc.)

·       Politics (Machiavelli and Machiavellianism, Propaganda, Cover-ups, Conspiracies, etc.)

·       Archive Disclosures

·       Fictions/Finzioni

·       Revisionism

·       Interpretation and Misinterpretation

·       Media Reliability

We welcome submissions that address the potential topics from a variety of perspectives and disciplines, such as Film and Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Performance Studies, etc.

Presentations should not exceed 20 minutes (approximately 8-10 pages of double-spaced text). Papers and presentations may be in Italian or English. We strongly recommend participants to use the language in which they feel more confident.

Please send an anonymous abstract and a cover sheet with the title of your paper, your name, affiliation, contact information (including telephone and email address) and technical equipment needed to [log in to unmask]. Abstracts should not exceed 250 words and should be in Microsoft Word format.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: January 10, 2012.
