When a former colleague carried out a topography survey of the bell pits on Cannock Chase he found that rather than being randomly distributed in areas where the coal seams dipped below the surfaces, many, though not all, ran in lines. He concluded that some of the bell pits were not so much the remains of individual extraction holes but of ventilation/access shafts cut down into drifts

Hope you HEROs don’t mind me jumping in with a final word on this,  but it may interest you that ‘bell pit’ is the subject of heated debate among mining historians and archaeologists and our attempts to unravel it are discussed briefly in the draft Archaeological Framework Assessment for coal – available on the NAMHO website http://www.vmine.net/namho-2010/research.asp#phase2  See p.17 and 33 of the Coal Assessment

All the best

We've got some of the coal variety, at Broad Oak Farm, Strelley (1017654).  These were scheduled via the MPP review of coal mining, in 1998.

Cheers to all
