When a former colleague carried out a topography survey of the bell pits on Cannock Chase he found that rather than being randomly distributed in areas where
the coal seams dipped below the surfaces, many, though not all, ran in lines. He concluded that some of the bell pits were not so much the remains of individual extraction holes but of ventilation/access shafts cut down into drifts
