Weren’t they a bit mystified when a big chunk of landscape didn’t produce any data? I shall certainly be at the Sidcot meeting…

The point is that according to their review they consulted Somerset and Gloucestershire HER which covers you me and Rod!

When did enquiries come to HERs? I’ve no record of us being asked at North Somerset: apart from the Nailsea and Clapton coal fields, the hard stone quarries all across the unitary, the mining industry for lead, iron and zinc all over Broadfield Down and Mendip, no we’ve no extractive industry in North Somerset… and they’re holding one of the meetings here, no less!

Subject: Research Framework for the Archaeology of Extractive Industries seminars

Posted on behalf of Phil Newman, National Assocation of Mining History Organisations (NAMHO) Officer

The Research Framework for the Archaeology of the Extractive Industries, currently being carried out by NAMHO on behalf of EH is now entering its final phase.  Many of you will recall being contacted for information from your HERs early last year and the information you supplied contributed to the compiling of  the assessment documents.  We will now be

holding two seminars, one in the north at Caphouse in Yorkshire on 21st January and a second in the south at Winscome in Somerset on 11th February. These seminars will provide an opportunity to discuss the results of the assessments and a forum for suggestions as to future directions for archaeological  research.  HER officers are uniquely placed to contribute on this topic, being very aware of where the gaps in the data may lie and we would value your contributions in this debate.  We therefore invite you to attend these sessions.  The sessions are free and lunch for all delegates is provided.  Full details will be available on the NAMHO Website. Please let us know if you will be attending.

Many of the framework assessments have been posted to the NAMHO website and others will follow soon. Your comments, amendments and criticisms would be most welcome. In particular the Assessment of  HER Sources. This document is over a year old now so any up to date comments or new information would be much valued.

For further information and updated information, please check the NAMHO Website http://www.vmine.net/namho-2010/research.asp

Contact details for this project are also available at the above website.

Yours sincerely
