APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING 'Extremely informative and enlightening': Delegates feed back on 'In your own words' interpretation and translation event A free learning event on the use of interpretation and translation services (ITS) in healthcare has been positively received by delegates and Department of Health officials. 'In your own words' was organised in partnership by the Race Equality Foundation, Sunderland City Council, Mothertongue, Everyday Language Solutions and the Department of Health, and speakers and delegates considered issues including the challenges of commissioning ITS, using ITS in mental health services and ensuring quality assurance in ITS. The day enjoyed a strong turnout and enthusiastic debate from all involved. Attendees heard from speakers including Beverley Costa of Mothertongue, Dr Paramjit Gill, Professor Rachel Tribe, Renata Towlson and Deputy Director for Equality and Partnerships at the Department of Health, Barry Mussenden. Workshops were also provided by DH and Language Line. Renata Towlson described the event as 'a rare opportunity... to meet in one place commissioning professionals, procurement representatives and small businesses specialising in providing interpreting and translation services across England'. Renata is Senior Procurement Officer at the University of Nottingham Hospitals Trust, an organisation providing services to over 2.5 million residents in Nottingham, and specialist services to a further 3-4 million people from neighbouring counties each year. Renata's presentation highlighted some of the challenges of commissioning and procuring ITS, and worked to break down barriers between the commissioning and procurement processes. The Race Equality Foundation will continue to carry out work on the issues surrounding ITS, and further events may be organised in future.
