People, Progress and Environmental Protection

As world leaders mark the 20th anniversary of the historic Earth Summit of 1992 with a return visit to Rio, it is timely to take stock of the progress that has been made towards sustainability.  The challenges that continue to impact both people and the environment today are highly visible leading to the following questions: is it possible to accelerate the means of sustainable development to achieve relevant solutions, or has the time come to begin to question the viability of sustainable development as a guiding principle through which to deliver solutions?

This international peer reviewed conference will provide a forum for discussion on the complex issue of sustainability, welcoming both empirical and theoretical contributions considering developed, developing and transition economy perspectives relating to one of the following themes:

·         Critical perspectives on sustainable development

·         Science of Sustainability: determining the need for transitions, assessing progress and trends

·         Effectiveness of governance, institutional and economic structures for sustainability

·         Sustainable production and consumption

·         Regional approaches to sustainable development

Abstracts

Abstracts of up to 1,000 words should be submitted to one of the conference tracks for review (see website for individual calls for papers relating to tracks within each of the major themes). 

Deadline for abstract submission is now 20 January 2012.  Abstracts will be reviewed by track chairs and their decisions notified by 20 February 2012.

Plenary Sessions

Internationally renowned key note speakers will address the themes of the conference from a range of academic, policy, and industry perspectives.   Confirmed speakers include: Prof Julian Agyeman, Tufts University; Dr Simon Bell, Open University; Prof Simon Morse, Surrey University; Prof Dr Miranda Schreurs, Freie Universität Berlin; Prof Dr Luiz Rego, Pontifícia Universidade Católica, Rio de Janeiro; Lord Deben (Rt Hon John Gummer), Chair of Forewind and Former UK Secretary of State; and Lord Prescott (Rt Hon John Prescott), Former UK Secretary of State for the Environment.

Social programme

The conference includes a gala dinner and for a modest additional fee delegates can choose from a number of optional excursions on the 27^th June.
