We will be putting out on the women's engineering society network.

Cobham in Dorset have got five fantastic women engineers in the new intake
of grads that I have just trained as STEM ambassadors and am working on for
you :)

We'll be putting out a formal call soon but if anyone knows any good role
models please let them know they can get in early at:

Thanks,

  Hi Tina

Actually, for 2011, 0% think science or engineering are dirty or boring so
we’ve won on that point! Sadly 50% do still think they are too hard and 60%
that they don’t have enough female role models.

I guess we’ve all still got jobs for a few years to come!

Nicola,

Shocking news! With all of the work being done in schools by IoP, RAE,
STEMNET, Futuremorph and the list goes on and on, it is hard to believe
that girls still have the perception that science / engineering is too
hard, dirty or boring!

*Subject:* [PSCI-COM] Girls Attitudes Survey 2011

If you haven’t seen Girlguiding UK’s latest Girls Attitudes Survey yet I
recommend taking a look at the Education and Careers report:
http://girlsattitudes.girlguiding.org.uk/data_and_report.aspx . This is the
third year of the survey which explores the opinions of 7-21 year old
girls, not just those participating in Guiding.

Highlights include:

More than half of girls say that hairdressing is what girls are interested
in (57 per cent),while they veer away from engineering because of a lack of
interest (51 per cent) and of female role models (60 per cent). There is
also a perception that not many girls or women do this kind of job (47 per
cent), and that they don’t know enough about it (43 per cent).

53 per cent think science/engineering is too hard or complicated, 35 per
cent say it would be difficult to get a job of this kind, and 22 per cent
would be put off by the working environment.

There was a lot of talk of STEM at their event I attended last night but
given concerns about gender issues surprisingly little representation from
our community. All three years of the survey can be found on their website:
http://girlsattitudes.girlguiding.org.uk/home.aspx

Best wishes
Nicola
