The Federation is working with CyMAL to help implement the
Museum Strategy for Wales.
For this purpose it has appointed Sarah Daly and Rachael Lovering to deliver a
programme of work concentrating on areas led by individual museums, the
Federation, and liaising with CyMAL and Amgueddfa Cymru - National
Museum Wales on projects which they are leading on and on which the Federation
are partners.
Why is the Strategy important?
- The
Museum Strategy for Wales outlines clear, shared ambitions and roles for
the whole sector. This is a chance for us to be used as a model for other
home nations’ strategies and to promote ourselves nationally and publicise
the great work we are doing.
- The
Strategy was published by CyMAL; a division of the Welsh
Government, so it underpins Government policy on
museums. It therefore strengthens our position politically,
it relates to Accreditation and is an important part of grant
criteria for CyMAL.
- The Strategy
identifies actions for all museums, either working individually or in
partnership. It builds on activity already in progress, allowing us
to demonstrate the good work that happens, and also suggests ways of
working more effectively using existing resources.
What is the brief?
- Communication
across the sector about the Strategy, information and promotional work,
identifying training needs and planning for the future.
- There
are a lot of great things happening in Welsh Museums already meeting the
actions in the Strategy which we would like to know more about and use as
Case Studies. If you have interesting projects, effective partnerships
within and beyond the sector or policies and plans that you are proud of,
please let us know – especially if you have photographs too!
- Finding
out from you what you are already doing to meet the criteria in the
strategy and what you need to help you do so, will help us to create model
documents to help museums across Wales – and even beyond - with a range of
issues.
-
We’re
hoping to use the Federation website to publish projects and good practice
but we also want to find out from people what the best methods of
communication to promote the work of the strategy are. We’d like you to tell us if you
use blogs, social networking,email
lists, your own website, People’s Collection Wales or other means to
communicate and promote your museum. If you’d like training for this we’d
also like to know.
- We also want to find out what peoples’
general training needs are and liaise with CyMAL on providing
training and development opportunities.
What can you do?
- Attend one of the regional meetings
we have organised to discuss the implementation of the Strategy. Please see the Fed website for more details
of these; www.welshmuseumsfederation.org
- Access the Advocacy Strategy
published by the Federation, available on their website along with a toolkit
data and template to write your own strategy to promote yourselves to your
stakeholders. Visit www.welshmuseumsfederation.org under the section on advocacy.
