Hi
Lynda,
At
this point I’m just trying to cover my trip expenses, so I am charging
very little.
I
normally charge $300 U.S. per hour presentation.
I
have offered schools in Bradford the bargain of one presentation for 150 pounds
and two presentations for 200 pounds. A super
bargain!
But
I’ve been thinking about it and I hate the idea of going to a place, having time
on my hands, and not connecting with the local community and especially the
children!
So
at this point I’m willing to go even further.
This
is a deal I usually only offer Muslim communities because they tend to be the
most strapped for cash and it’s a matter of giving back.
I’m
quite aware that doing this might ‘cheapen’ me in some people’s eyes—people
never appreciate what is given too freely—and further they might expect me to
lower my prices in the future and devalue my work—but I assure you it’s not that
at all!
Basically
I’m saying that institutions like libraries should pay what they can afford. I
think most people are pretty honest about these things. If they can afford 150
pounds, all well and good, if not, as long as it’s reasonable, it’s
fine.
On
another note, I’m traveling into Portsmouth on Nov. 24th and would
like to offer this opportunity to a public library there but I have no contacts
whatsoever. Could you advise me on how to help spread the word? I’m only there
for the afternoon of the 24th and the morning of the 25th
although, if there’s a venue in London that wants me on the 25th,
that will be doable as well.
All
the best,
Rukhsana

HI Rukhsana
Further to your email about wanting to
arrange presentations to coincide with the award ceremony - could you give me an
idea of what you charge please. We are a public library so obviously operate on
a tight budget but it is possible that we could share costs with a local
Children's Centre.
