Dear all,
I am trying to track down sources of information on the use
of coal in big country houses from the mid-18th century onwards.
In particular, I’m interested to find out:
-
Which servants were involved in
managing/tending fires and in particular, transporting coal from the cellars to
the fireplaces around the House?
-
How often fires were cleared and
relaid and what this involved?
-
How much coal an average fire place,
alit all day, would need?
-
How coal was delivered to large
houses and by whom?
-
I’m in interested in how the
above processes and the equipment used changed from mid-18th to late
19th century?
If anyone knows of any useful reading material/places to
visit which reference the above, I’d be interested to hear about them.
Thanks for your help.
Best wishes,
Fenella
