Dear Dominic

Have you had a chance to look at the resources we produced for the ESOL materials for Migrant workers project?  They are on the Excellence Gateway and were written by Celine Castelino and Theresa Latham. http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk/page.aspx?o=196280  These teaching and learning materials were developed as a result of a project commissioned by LSIS in March 2008. The reading, writing and speaking and listening modules support learners from Entry 1 – Level 1 in seven occupational sectors: Agriculture, Catering, Cleaning and facilities management, Construction, Health and social care, Manufacturing, and Transport and aviation. Guidance for practitioners on using the Speaking and Listening materials was also  developed.

Relating to this, I was interested to read the Guardian's article last week on the proposed "Curry College".  The Guardian reports that "The communities secretary, Eric Pickles, is to make a UK curry college to teach British workers the secret of perfect pakoras...".  I hope the Secretary of State's proposal includes jobs for all workers in Britain not just as narrowly as 'British jobs for British workers'! As we all know, there is plenty of evidence that people learn a language best when the context is something they are deeply interested in.

Best wishes

Chris

Subject: An E3 student wishes to become a school catering assistant and also study Food hygiene

Hello everyone

I work in a community centre for a provider, and have

very limited advice, information and guidance resources.

One of my students , a Muslim woman from India , who

is a strong E3 student wishes to become a school catering

assistant ( eg  dinner-lady , in old-speak ) , before this she

wants to study food hygiene. I work in Newham.  Can anyone

suggest any suitable courses ( in Newham ) or resources ,

whether paper-based or Internet based.

Thanks in advance
