NATECLA Branches
At the heart of NATECLA is the work of its branches. NATECLA has members throughout the United Kingdom. New NATECLA members are put in contact with the membership secretary of the branch nearest to them. Active branch networks organise termly training events and help foster a supportive network of teachers with ESOL teaching in common. If you would like to become more active in your branch or area, please contact us.

ELTons 2012 - Call for Applications! The Macmillan Education Award for Innovative Writing is open to aspiring ELT authors who have not yet published any of their work. The winner receives £1,000 and the opportunity to publish their work. Applications are judged by a panel of ELT experts and the winners are announced at an awards ceremony in London on 23 May 2012. Focus Group at the House of Lords - Following proposed changes to funding for ESOL, BIS undertook an equality impact assessment of ESOL published in July 2011. This resulted in further changes to funding enabling colleges to fund ESOL provision for some learners. NATECLA Chair, Judy Kirsh, joined a focus group with Baroness Margaret Sharp, Lord Timothy Boswell, ESOL teachers and specialists in the field at the House of Lords on 4 September 2011. The group discussed the changes to the funding of ESOL and the impact this was having on those teaching ESOL and their learners. The IFL have provided a summary of the focus group’s discussion, concerns and recommendations

Speak to the future is a new campaign which is highlighting the importance of languages, language learning and professional language activities for the UK. Targeting the public, media and government, their initiatives are raising awareness of the issue – and aim to bring about a step-change in attitude and policy in favour of languages. British Council ESOL Nexus Workshop: Choosing and using Internet resources with ESOL learners. 26th November, 2011, Birmingham Metropolitan College, 10 – 12.30. No charge for attendance, light refreshments are provided. This workshop is part of an innovative project, supported by the European Integration Fund. The workshop will take a critical look at the issues raised by the use of the internet in the ESOL classroom and will give you the opportunity to apply what you learn to evaluating some selected web materials and relate this to the contexts within which you teach. NALDIC 19th Annual National Conference - EAL and Additional Needs
To be held at The Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall, University of Leeds, Saturday 26th November 2011. This year's conference, organised in collaboration with the University of Leeds, will address the issues of EAL and additional needs. The Simply Cracking Good Stories project involves encouraging writers and non-writers to produce short fiction books for immigrant adults whose oral proficiency is very low and who are just beginning to read in a second language. Some of you may have participated in Martha Young-Scholten's workshop at the Warwick conference in July.
