Thanks for the info Paul. We feel it’s very misleading – I think we’re going to be making Language Pack changes! Perhaps if others would like to see this functionality changed they could get in touch with Blackboard quoting LRN-25971.

I’m waiting to hear from Blackboard about how they count stats for folders as apparently this is different to content items.

Best wishes

Melanie

Hi Melanie,

This is how statistics tracking has worked for as long as I can remember.  It’s pretty poor, even misleading, to say the least.  Having said that, once it was explained to me by Blackboard I can understand why it does what it does.  It’s definitely something that needs improving though.

You’ve got the issue of what statistics tracking actually records as a ‘hit’.  I mean, the initial thought most people will have would be that it should record a click, whether that click is on an external link, a file that’s been uploaded, or the ‘play’ button associated with an embedded video.  If that’s the case, should you even be able to set statistics tracking for a simple content item that won’t have a click associated with it?  Should the statistics tracking applied to ‘items’ differ depending on the type of item?  Arguably – yes – as this would be the only accurate/comparable way of tracking individual items but in reality it’d be very very difficult to achieve in a fool-proof way that allowed for all the different types of content and all the different methods of adding them.

Enough rambling for now though..

Cheers,

Subject: Item statistics - track as the item is displayed not clicked

Hello

We are on Blackboard 9.1 SP5.

I just want to raise awareness of an issue we’ve noticed with item statistics. Essentially if there are multiple items in one content area/folder, the reports run individually for each item are identical.

So for example, in one folder a Lecturer has 3 items – 2 external links and one articulate presentation, each has statistics tracking switched on. The items have been available for a few weeks. When we run the reports for each item, we get three identical reports.

I’ve reported this to Blackboard and have been told this is working as designed – the statistics track how often the item was ‘displayed’ not clicked. I’ve been given an improvement number - LRN-25971.

I’m not sure if this is something new to 9.1 – we were on 7.3 before this Summer and feel sure it was different although I don’t have any evidence. If anyone knows that this has changed it would be good to know.

Best wishes
