Dear Mailbase

Our delivery ward is having trouble with fetal scalp blood gas samples.

They like to use sterile capillary sets. The ones they use have 100 iu heparin in a 115ul tube, but have been having problems with samples clotting.

The capillaries in use in NNU have more heparin in but the delivery ward are reluctant to use these as they are nor sterile.

Are the problems they experience due to insufficient heparin or is it a collection technique / sample mixing problem?

What do other people use and do they have problems with samples clotting?
