so the simple effect for A1 in females would be: 1 0 0 1 0 1 0 0 and A2 for females would be: 0 1 0 1 0 0 0 1 so A1 >A2 for females would be: 1 -1 0 0 0 1 0 -1 ? and A1 <A2 for males would be: 1 -1 0 0 1 0 -1 0 ? Wouldn't the female A1 > A2 contrast (1 -1 0 0 0 1 0 -1) give me the answer? (It is often claimed that I can only compare the simple effects if the interaction is significant so, that would mean masking the interaction contrast ( 0 0 0 0 -1 1 1 -1) ?
