A - Introduction to river hydrology and hydraulics 8 & 9 November 2011 and 21 & 22 February 2012

Sustainable catchment management relies on a robust understanding of rainfall-runoff and hydraulic processes, of how variability in catchment characteristics can influence rates and volumes of runoff, and of the relationship between flow and water level at any location. The development of appropriate catchment management solutions is also dependent on the ability to correctly evaluate the impact of different options.

The lectures will guide students through the fundamental science, the most up to date supporting tools, and will demonstrate content and relevance through a series of worked examples. This course is designed for anyone who requires an understanding of the key hydrological and hydraulic processes, and computational techniques. It is suitable for recent graduates, consultants, local authority staff, conservation and fisheries officers, development control and flood defence officers, and for specialists from other disciplines involved in river and catchment management.

Some background knowledge in hydrology or hydraulics would be helpful, or education to degree level in geography, civil engineering or environmental science.

B - Introduction to flood risk analysis and management, 10 & 11 November 2011 and 23 & 24 February 2012

Sustainable flood risk management is about maximising both social and economic resilience against flooding, by protecting and working with the environment, in a way which is fair and affordable both now and in the future. Resilience to flooding can be increased through a variety of measures, including structural (flood defence), non-structural (flood warning, floodplain storage, flood event management) and, most commonly, an optimum combination of the two.

The course will introduce the concepts of flood risk analysis and management within the context of current UK policies and legislation, drawing on the experience of the tutors. Current techniques in considering climate change and joint probability will be presented in outline, as will latest guidance on producing flood risk assessments. Due to the size of the subject, the course will focus on river and urban flooding. However, much of the course content will have relevance to tidal and coastal flooding.

The course is designed for anyone who requires an understanding of flood risk and its relevance to river management and development planning. It is suitable for recent graduates, consultants, local authority staff, development control and flood defence officers, and for specialists from other disciplines involved in river and catchment management.

It is designed as a suitable follow-on course from Introduction to River Hydrology and Hydraulics, but can be undertaken independently. Some background knowledge of hydrology and/or hydraulics would be helpful.

Venue - The course will be held at HR Wallingford's site at Wallingford in Oxfordshire, mid-way between Reading and Oxford.

Evening dinner - On the first evening of each course, there will be a dinner for participants at a local restaurant.

Continuing professional development - Each course merits two full days CPD; a form will be included in the course documentation.

Fee - The fee for each two day course is £525.00 plus VAT per participant and includes all documentation, lunch, and morning and afternoon refreshments on all days, plus evening dinner on Day 1. Both courses can be taken as a combined package at a discount rate of £885.00 plus VAT, only when booked together. These linked two-day courses can be taken on their own, or as a combined course. For the combined package we recommend that Course A should be taken first.

Cancellation policy - If you cancel your booking more than four weeks before the start of the event, your fees will be refunded minus a 10% administrative charge.
